The susceptibility of unreinforced masonry (URM) walls to collapse under seismic loading has been repeatedly observed and documented across a multitude of earthquakes worldwide. Out-of-plane and in-plane failure modes have been identified as critical failure mechanisms for URM structures during a seismic event, and both failure modes pose a significant risk to life.
